A remarkable silver Zodiac Rupee of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, struck at the Ahmadabad mint in AH 1027 (Regnal Year 13). This celebrated Leo type depicts a lion walking left with the rising sun behind, one of the most iconic and artistically significant coin designs of the Mughal series. Jahangir’s Zodiac coinage represents a bold departure from traditional Islamic numismatic conventions and is regarded as one of the finest achievements in world coinage.
This example corresponds to KM-150.11 and has been PCGS certified VF Details. The coin is noted as lightly tooled, while retaining attractive detail and the distinctive Zodiac design that has made these issues highly sought after by collectors of Mughal and world coins.
Provenance: Ex Dr. Axel Wahlstedt Collection. Dr. Axel Johan Gabriel Wahlstedt (1867–1943) was a distinguished Swedish military physician, renowned numismatist, and President of the Swedish Numismatic Society from 1916 to 1934. An accomplished scholar, he authored several important works on Swedish coinage and medals and was elected a corresponding member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in recognition of his outstanding contributions to numismatics. Coins from his collection carry exceptional historical provenance and are highly desirable to collectors.
An impressive example of Jahangir’s celebrated Zodiac coinage with prestigious pedigree.
